Dactylorhiza hatagirea
Dactylorhiza hatagirea is a species of orchid found in the Himalayas. It is commonly known as Marsh Orchid or Palm-leaved Orchid. This plant is highly valued for its medicinal properties and is used in traditional Ayurvedic medicine.
Description[edit | edit source]
Dactylorhiza hatagirea is a perennial herb that grows up to 60 cm in height. The plant has tuberous roots and palmate leaves. The flowers are pink to purple in color and bloom from June to August. The plant is found in moist and marshy areas in the Himalayas at altitudes of 2800 to 4000 meters.
Medicinal Uses[edit | edit source]
In Ayurvedic medicine, Dactylorhiza hatagirea is used for its various medicinal properties. The tubers of the plant are used in the treatment of diabetes, inflammation, and sexual dysfunction. The plant is also used as an aphrodisiac and to improve physical strength and stamina.
Conservation Status[edit | edit source]
Due to over-harvesting for its medicinal properties, Dactylorhiza hatagirea is considered a threatened species in many parts of its range. Efforts are being made to conserve the species and promote sustainable harvesting practices.
Cultivation[edit | edit source]
Cultivation of Dactylorhiza hatagirea requires a cool and moist environment. The plant prefers acidic soil and partial shade. Propagation is usually done through division of the tubers.
