The Dallas Mavericks are a professional basketball team based in Dallas, Texas. They are a member of the Western Conference's Southwest Division in the National Basketball Association (NBA). The team was established in 1980 and has since become one of the prominent franchises in the league.

Founding and Early Years[edit | edit source]

The Dallas Mavericks were founded in 1980 by businessman Don Carter and his partner Norm Sonju. The team was named after the 1957–1962 TV western "Maverick". The Mavericks joined the NBA as an expansion team for the 1980–81 season.

In the late 1990s and early 2000s, the Mavericks began to rise to prominence under the ownership of Mark Cuban, who purchased the team in 2000. Cuban's leadership and investment in the team helped transform the Mavericks into a competitive franchise.

The pinnacle of the Mavericks' success came in the 2010–11 NBA season when they won their first NBA Championship. Led by Dirk Nowitzki, the Mavericks defeated the Miami Heat in the NBA Finals, winning the series 4–2. Nowitzki was named the Finals MVP for his outstanding performance.
