Daniel Smith Donelson (June 23, 1801 – April 17, 1863) was an American politician and soldier. He was born in Tennessee and was a member of the prominent Donelson family. Donelson served as a brigadier general in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War.

Daniel Smith Donelson was born on June 23, 1801, in Tennessee. He was a member of the influential Donelson family, which had close ties to President Andrew Jackson. Donelson pursued a career in law and politics before the outbreak of the Civil War.
Political Career[edit | edit source]
Donelson served as a member of the Tennessee state legislature and later as a U.S. Congressman representing Tennessee. He was known for his support of states' rights and the institution of slavery.
Military Service[edit | edit source]
During the American Civil War, Donelson joined the Confederate Army and was appointed as a brigadier general. He participated in several key battles, including the Battle of Shiloh and the Battle of Stones River.
Later Life and Legacy[edit | edit source]
After the war, Donelson faced financial difficulties and health issues. He passed away on April 17, 1863. Despite his controversial political views, Donelson is remembered for his military service and dedication to the Confederate cause.
