Danny Lyon (born March 16, 1942) is an American photographer and filmmaker known for his socially conscious and documentary-style work. He is considered one of the most influential photographers of the 20th century, capturing the essence of American life and subcultures through his lens.

Danny Lyon was born in Brooklyn, New York. He attended the University of Chicago, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in history in 1963. It was during his time at university that Lyon developed an interest in photography, influenced by the works of Robert Frank and Henri Cartier-Bresson.

Civil Rights Movement[edit | edit source]
Lyon's career began in earnest when he became the first staff photographer for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) during the Civil Rights Movement. The Bikeriders[edit | edit source]
In 1968, Lyon published The Bikeriders, a groundbreaking photo-essay that documented the lives of members of the Chicago Outlaws Motorcycle Club. This work is notable for its immersive approach, as Lyon not only photographed the bikers but also rode with them, capturing their lifestyle from an insider's perspective.
