Danny McGrain
Danny McGrain (born 1 May 1950) is a retired Scottish footballer who is widely regarded as one of the greatest right-backs in the history of the sport. He spent the majority of his career playing for Celtic and also represented the Scotland national football team.
Early Life[edit | edit source]
Danny McGrain was born in Glasgow, Scotland. He grew up in the Maryhill area of the city and showed an early talent for football, joining the local youth team before being scouted by Celtic.
Club Career[edit | edit source]
Celtic[edit | edit source]
McGrain joined Celtic in 1967 and made his first-team debut in 1970. He quickly established himself as a key player, known for his defensive skills, stamina, and ability to support the attack. During his time at Celtic, McGrain won numerous Scottish Football League titles, Scottish Cups, and Scottish League Cups. He was part of the team that reached the semi-finals of the European Cup in 1974.
Hamilton Academical[edit | edit source]
After leaving Celtic in 1987, McGrain joined Hamilton Academical where he played for two seasons before retiring from professional football.
International Career[edit | edit source]
McGrain earned 62 caps for the Scotland national football team between 1973 and 1982. He represented Scotland in the 1974 FIFA World Cup and the 1978 FIFA World Cup.
Coaching Career[edit | edit source]
After retiring as a player, McGrain moved into coaching. He has held various coaching roles at Celtic and other clubs, contributing his vast experience and knowledge of the game.
Personal Life[edit | edit source]
McGrain has been open about his battle with diabetes, which he was diagnosed with during his playing career. Despite this, he continued to perform at the highest level, becoming an inspiration for many.
