Darshan Singh Pheruman

Darshan Singh Pheruman (1885 – 27 October 1969) was an Indian freedom fighter, politician, and a prominent figure in the Sikh community. He is best known for his role in the Indian independence movement and his advocacy for the rights of Sikhs in India.

Early Life[edit | edit source]

Darshan Singh Pheruman was born in 1885 in the village of Pheruman, located in the Amritsar district of Punjab. He belonged to a Sikh family and was deeply influenced by the teachings of Guru Granth Sahib from an early age.

Indian Independence Movement[edit | edit source]

Pheruman was actively involved in the Indian independence movement. He joined the Indian National Congress and participated in various movements and protests against the British Raj. He was imprisoned multiple times for his activities and became a respected leader among his peers.

Role in Sikh Politics[edit | edit source]

After India gained independence in 1947, Pheruman continued to work for the rights of the Sikh community. He was a member of the Shiromani Akali Dal and played a significant role in the Punjabi Suba movement, which aimed to create a separate state for Punjabi-speaking people.

Hunger Strike and Death[edit | edit source]

In 1969, Pheruman undertook a hunger strike to demand the implementation of the Punjabi Suba resolution. He fasted for 74 days before passing away on 27 October 1969. His death brought significant attention to the issues faced by the Sikh community and the demands for a separate Punjabi-speaking state.

Darshan Singh Pheruman is remembered as a martyr and a dedicated leader who fought for the rights of his community. His contributions to the Indian independence movement and his advocacy for the Sikh community have left a lasting impact on Indian history.
