The Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth is the medical school of Dartmouth College, located in Hanover, New Hampshire. Founded in 1797, it is the fourth oldest medical school in the United States. The school is named after Theodor Seuss Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss, who was a Dartmouth alumnus.
History[edit]
The Geisel School of Medicine was originally established as the Dartmouth Medical School in 1797 by Nathan Smith. It was the first medical school in the United States to be associated with a liberal arts college. Over the years, the school has evolved significantly, expanding its curriculum and research capabilities.
In 2012, the school was renamed in honor of Theodor Geisel and his wife, Audrey, following a substantial donation from their estate. This renaming was part of a broader effort to enhance the school's profile and resources.
Academics[edit]
The Geisel School of Medicine offers a variety of degree programs, including the Doctor of Medicine (MD), Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), and Master of Public Health (MPH). The school is known for its innovative curriculum, which integrates basic science and clinical experience from the first year of study.
The school emphasizes a collaborative learning environment and encourages students to engage in interdisciplinary research. Geisel is also known for its focus on rural health and primary care, reflecting its location in New Hampshire.
Research[edit]
Geisel is a leader in medical research, with particular strengths in cancer, neuroscience, and health care delivery science. The school is home to several research centers and institutes, including the Norris Cotton Cancer Center and the Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice.
Clinical Affiliations[edit]
The Geisel School of Medicine has strong clinical affiliations with several hospitals and health systems, including the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, the largest hospital in northern New England. These affiliations provide students with diverse clinical training opportunities.
