David Gillespie

David Arthur Gillespie (born 20 December 1957) is an Australian politician and medical doctor. He has been a member of the House of Representatives since 2013, representing the Division of Lyne in New South Wales for the National Party.

Early life and education[edit | edit source]

Gillespie was born in Canberra, Australian Capital Territory. He attended Saint Ignatius' College, Riverview and later studied medicine at the University of Sydney, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS).

Medical career[edit | edit source]

Before entering politics, Gillespie worked as a gastroenterologist and hepatologist. He practiced medicine in regional New South Wales, including in the towns of Taree and Port Macquarie.

Political career[edit | edit source]

Gillespie entered politics as a member of the National Party of Australia. He was elected to the House of Representatives in the 2013 federal election, representing the Division of Lyne. He succeeded Rob Oakeshott, an independent who had held the seat since 2008.

In the Turnbull Government, Gillespie was appointed Assistant Minister for Rural Health in February 2016. He later served as Assistant Minister for Health from July 2016 to December 2017. In December 2017, he was appointed Assistant Minister for Children and Families, a position he held until August 2018.

Personal life[edit | edit source]

Gillespie is married and has three children. He resides in Port Macquarie, New South Wales.
