Day of Arafah

The Day of Arafah (Arabic: يوم عرفة) is an important day in the Islamic calendar, observed on the 9th day of Dhu al-Hijjah, the twelfth and final month of the Islamic lunar calendar. It is the second day of the Hajj pilgrimage and the day before Eid al-Adha.
Significance[edit | edit source]
The Day of Arafah holds great significance for Muslims around the world. It is considered the holiest day in the Islamic calendar, especially for those performing the Hajj pilgrimage. On this day, pilgrims gather at the plain of Arafat, near Mecca, to perform the most essential rite of Hajj, which is standing in prayer and supplication from noon until sunset.
The day commemorates the final sermon of the Prophet Muhammad, delivered during his last pilgrimage, where he emphasized the principles of justice, equality, and the importance of following the teachings of Islam. It is a day of repentance, reflection, and seeking forgiveness from Allah.
Rituals and Observances[edit | edit source]
For pilgrims, the Day of Arafah is the climax of the Hajj pilgrimage. They spend the day in the plain of Arafat, engaging in prayers, reciting the Quran, and making supplications. The standing at Arafat, known as Wuquf, is a fundamental part of Hajj, and missing it invalidates the pilgrimage.
For Muslims not performing Hajj, it is recommended to fast on the Day of Arafah. Fasting on this day is believed to expiate the sins of the previous year and the coming year, as per the sayings of the Prophet Muhammad.
Historical Context[edit | edit source]
The Day of Arafah is linked to several historical and religious events. It is believed to be the day when the religion of Islam was perfected and the favor of Allah was completed upon the believers, as mentioned in the Quran (Surah Al-Ma'idah, 5:3).
