DeNorval Unthank

DeNorval Unthank (1907–1977) was an influential African American physician and civil rights activist. He made significant contributions to the medical field and was a prominent figure in the fight against racial discrimination in the United States.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

DeNorval Unthank was born in 1907 in Allensworth, California. He grew up in a time of significant racial segregation and discrimination. Despite these challenges, Unthank pursued higher education and earned his medical degree from Howard University College of Medicine in 1932.

Medical Career[edit | edit source]

After completing his education, Unthank moved to Portland, Oregon, where he became one of the first African American physicians in the state. He established a successful medical practice and was known for his dedication to providing quality healthcare to underserved communities.

Civil Rights Activism[edit | edit source]

Unthank was deeply involved in the civil rights movement. He worked tirelessly to combat racial discrimination in healthcare and other sectors. He was a member of several organizations, including the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and the Urban League. His efforts were instrumental in the desegregation of hospitals and other public facilities in Portland.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

DeNorval Unthank's contributions to medicine and civil rights have left a lasting impact. In recognition of his work, a park in Portland was named Unthank Park in his honor. His legacy continues to inspire future generations of physicians and activists.
