Decade

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Decade is a unit of time that represents a period of 10 years. The term is derived from the Ancient Greek: dekas, which means a group of ten. Decades may describe any ten-year period, such as those of a person's life, or refer to specific groupings of calendar years.

Overview[edit | edit source]

A decade is a period of 10 years. The word is derived from the Ancient Greek: dekas, which means a group of ten. Other words for spans of years also come from Latin: lustrum (5 years), century (100 years), and millennium (1000 years).

Calendar decades[edit | edit source]

A calendar decade is a period of 10 years identified by the year 1 and ending with the year 10. For example, the 1960s encompassed the years 1960 through 1969. The way decades are viewed can be subjective, with some people viewing the 1960s as the years 1961 through 1970.

Other uses[edit | edit source]

In many cultures, decades are often used as a way to measure the passage of time. For example, one might refer to the 1980s and 1990s as a period of expansion and growth in the technology industry.
