Decibel
Decibel is a unit of measurement used to express the ratio of one value of a power or field quantity to another, on a logarithmic scale, the logarithmic quantity being called the power level or field level, respectively.

The decibel (symbol: dB) is a relative unit of measurement corresponding to one tenth of a bel (B). It is used to express the ratio of one value of a power or field quantity to another, on a logarithmic scale. It can be used to express a change in value (e.g., +1 dB or -1 dB) or an absolute value.
Applications[edit | edit source]
Decibels are commonly used in acoustics, electronics, and control theory. In electronics, the decibel is often used to measure power levels. In acoustics, it is used to measure sound pressure levels. In control theory, it is used to measure the gain of a system.
Calculation[edit | edit source]
The decibel is calculated using the formula:
- dB = 10 log10 (P1 / P2)
where P1 and P2 are the powers being compared.
