Delta4-abiraterone

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Delta4-Abiraterone is a steroid derivative that is used in the treatment of prostate cancer. It is a potent inhibitor of CYP17A1, an enzyme that is crucial for the production of androgens in the body.

Mechanism of Action[edit | edit source]

Delta4-Abiraterone works by inhibiting the enzyme CYP17A1, which is involved in the production of androgens. Androgens are hormones that stimulate prostate cancer cells to grow. By reducing the production of these hormones, Delta4-Abiraterone can slow the growth of prostate cancer cells.

Clinical Use[edit | edit source]

Delta4-Abiraterone is used in the treatment of metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC). It is typically used in patients who have already received chemotherapy containing docetaxel.

Side Effects[edit | edit source]

Common side effects of Delta4-Abiraterone include fatigue, joint pain, high blood pressure, and nausea. More serious side effects can include liver damage, heart problems, and an increased risk of infection.

Pharmacokinetics[edit | edit source]

Delta4-Abiraterone is administered orally. It is extensively metabolized in the liver by CYP3A4 and SULT2A1 into several inactive metabolites.

Research[edit | edit source]

Research is ongoing into the potential use of Delta4-Abiraterone in other types of cancer, as well as its potential as a treatment for other conditions that are influenced by androgens, such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).
