Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is a department of the U.S. government with the goal of protecting the health of all Americans and providing essential human services. Its motto is "Improving the health, safety, and well-being of America".

History[edit | edit source]

The Department of Health and Human Services was created in the 1953, but its roots go back to the earliest days of the nation. Over the decades, agencies in HHS have conducted some of the most important health and social science research in the world.

Structure[edit | edit source]

HHS is administered by the Secretary of Health and Human Services, who is appointed by the President with the advice and consent of the Senate. The United States Public Health Service (PHS) is the main division of the HHS and is led by the Assistant Secretary for Health. The current Secretary, Xavier Becerra, assumed office on March 19, 2021.

Functions[edit | edit source]

The Department of Health and Human Services protects the public from a variety of health threats by researching disease and conditions, and by implementing large-scale public health initiatives. HHS also supports the administration of numerous health agencies, including the Food and Drug Administration, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the National Institutes of Health.
