Department of Health and Human Services (Victoria) (DHHS) is a government department in Victoria, Australia. It is responsible for developing and delivering policies, programs, and services that support and enhance the health and wellbeing of all Victorians. The department's work covers a broad spectrum, including public health, healthcare services, child protection, family services, and housing assistance.

History[edit | edit source]

The Department of Health and Human Services was formed in 2015, following the merger of the Department of Health and the Department of Human Services. This reorganization aimed to create a more integrated approach to health and human services, ensuring that Victorians receive coordinated and comprehensive support.

Functions and Responsibilities[edit | edit source]

The DHHS has a wide range of responsibilities, which include but are not limited to:

  • Managing public hospitals and health services to ensure they provide high-quality healthcare.
  • Implementing health promotion initiatives to improve public health and prevent chronic diseases.
  • Overseeing the delivery of mental health services, including support for those with mental illness and their families.
  • Administering programs to protect children and promote their welfare, including child protection services and support for vulnerable families.
  • Providing housing services and support to those in need, including social housing and homelessness assistance.
  • Coordinating emergency management within the health and human services sectors, including responses to pandemics and natural disasters.

Organizational Structure[edit | edit source]

The DHHS is led by a Secretary, who reports directly to the Minister for Health and the Minister for Human Services. The department is divided into several divisions, each responsible for different aspects of health and human services. These divisions work in close collaboration with a range of stakeholders, including other government departments, non-government organizations, and the community sector, to deliver services effectively.

Challenges and Criticisms[edit | edit source]

Like many large organizations, the DHHS faces challenges in meeting the diverse and complex needs of the Victorian population. These challenges include managing the demand for health and human services, ensuring equitable access to services, and responding to emerging health threats. The department has also faced criticism over its handling of certain issues, such as the management of child protection cases and the response to health crises.

Future Directions[edit | edit source]

The DHHS is continually evolving to better serve the Victorian community. This includes adopting new technologies to improve service delivery, implementing innovative health promotion strategies, and strengthening partnerships with other sectors. The department is also focused on addressing social determinants of health to reduce health inequalities and improve the overall wellbeing of Victorians.
