Depersonalisation

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Depersonalisation (also known as Depersonalization) is a mental disorder characterized by persistent or recurrent feelings of being detached (dissociated) from one’s body or mental processes, usually with a feeling of being an outside observer of one's life (depersonalization), or of being detached from one's own thoughts or emotions (derealization).

Symptoms[edit | edit source]

The primary symptom of depersonalisation disorder is a distorted perception of the self. This can manifest as feeling disconnected from one's body, thoughts, feelings, or sensations. Other symptoms may include:

  • Feeling like an outside observer of one's own life
  • Feeling like a robot or living in a dream or movie
  • Emotional or physical numbness
  • Distorted perception of time
  • Distorted perception of size or shape of objects
  • Unfamiliarity with self or body
  • Unfamiliarity with surroundings

Causes[edit | edit source]

The exact cause of depersonalisation disorder is unknown, but it is believed to be linked to a variety of factors, including severe stress, trauma, and certain drugs. It is also associated with certain mental health conditions, such as anxiety, depression, and schizophrenia.

Diagnosis[edit | edit source]

Diagnosis of depersonalisation disorder is typically made based on a thorough clinical interview and a detailed patient history. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) provides criteria for the diagnosis of depersonalisation disorder.

Treatment[edit | edit source]

Treatment for depersonalisation disorder often involves a combination of psychotherapy, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and medication. Psychotherapy can help individuals understand and cope with their symptoms, while CBT can help change harmful thought patterns. Medications, such as antidepressants, may also be used to help manage symptoms.
