The depressor supercilii muscle is a small muscle located in the human face. It is often considered part of the orbicularis oculi muscle group, which is responsible for movements of the eyelid and surrounding areas.

Anatomy[edit | edit source]

The depressor supercilii muscle originates from the medial orbital rim, specifically from the frontal process of the maxilla. It inserts into the skin of the eyebrow, particularly the medial aspect of the eyebrow.

Function[edit | edit source]

The primary function of the depressor supercilii muscle is to depress the eyebrow, particularly the medial portion. This action contributes to expressions of frowning or concentration. It works in conjunction with other muscles such as the corrugator supercilii and the procerus muscle to produce facial expressions related to emotions and non-verbal communication.

Innervation[edit | edit source]

The depressor supercilii muscle is innervated by the facial nerve, specifically by the temporal and zygomatic branches. These branches are responsible for the motor control of the muscle, allowing it to perform its function in facial expression.

Clinical significance[edit | edit source]

Understanding the anatomy and function of the depressor supercilii muscle is important in plastic surgery and neurology. It is often considered in procedures such as botulinum toxin injections to reduce frown lines or in surgeries that aim to alter facial expressions. Dysfunction or paralysis of this muscle can affect facial symmetry and expression.
