Despicable Me is a 2010 American 3D computer-animated comedy film produced by Illumination Entertainment and distributed by Universal Pictures. It is the first installment in the Despicable Me film franchise.

The film centers around a supervillain named Gru who adopts three girls from an orphanage as part of his plan to steal the moon. However, he gradually changes for the better after spending time with the girls.

  • Gru: The main character, a supervillain who becomes a father figure to three orphan girls.
  • Margo, Edith, and Agnes: The three orphan girls who are adopted by Gru.
  • Dr. Nefario: Gru's elderly, hearing impaired gadget man.
  • Minions: Gru's small, yellow, cylindrical, creatures with one or two eyes.

Despicable Me was developed by Illumination Entertainment and was animated by Mac Guff, which was later bought by Illumination.

The film received positive reviews from critics and was a box office success, grossing over $543 million worldwide against a budget of $69 million. It launched the Despicable Me franchise with a series of sequels, including Despicable Me 2 in 2013, Despicable Me 3 in 2017, and a spin-off prequel, Minions, in 2015.

The Despicable Me franchise has since become a staple in popular culture, with the Minions becoming iconic characters. The franchise includes merchandise, theme park attractions, and even a spin-off film focusing on the Minions.
