Dessert spoon
Dessert Spoon
A dessert spoon is a spoon that is designed specifically for eating dessert. As a unit of culinary measure, a level dessertspoon (dstspn.) equals two teaspoons, or 10 milliliters, whereas a tablespoon is three teaspoons, 15 milliliters or one half ounce.
History[edit | edit source]
The dessert spoon as a measurement is believed to have originated in the United Kingdom where it is used as a measure of volume, especially in cooking recipes. The term "dessert spoon" began to appear in recipes and etiquette guides in the 17th century, as a tool for eating and serving a course at dinner that was sweet, such as fruit, pudding, or pastries.
Usage[edit | edit source]
In many English-speaking countries the term now refers to a large spoon used for serving; however, in some regions, including parts of Canada, it is the largest type of spoon used for eating. By extension, the term 'dessert spoon' is used as a cooking measure of volume.
Design[edit | edit source]
The design of a dessert spoon differs from place to place. In some countries, the dessert spoon has a longer handle, while in others it has a shorter one. The bowl of the spoon is usually wider and more circular than that of a teaspoon.
