Detoxification (alternative medicine)

Detoxification in the context of alternative medicine consists of an approach that aims to rid the body of "toxins" – accumulated substances that allegedly exert undesirable effects on individual health in the short or long term. Detoxification usually includes one or more of: dieting, fasting, consuming exclusively or avoiding specific foods (such as fats, carbohydrates, fruits, vegetables, juices, herbs, or water), colon cleansing, chelation therapy, and the removal of dental fillings.

Definition and scope[edit | edit source]

In the context of alternative medicine, the term detoxification is used to refer to the process of removing toxins from the body. The concept is rooted in a belief that the body accumulates toxins that are harmful to health and that these toxins can be purged through various means.

Methods[edit | edit source]

There are several methods of detoxification in alternative medicine, including:

  • Dieting and fasting: These methods involve consuming specific foods or avoiding certain foods to help the body eliminate toxins.
  • Colon cleansing: This method involves flushing the colon with fluids to remove waste. It's also known as colonic hydrotherapy or a colonic.
  • Chelation therapy: This is a medical procedure that involves the administration of chelating agents to remove heavy metals from the body.
  • Removal of dental fillings: Some practitioners believe that dental fillings, particularly those containing mercury, can contribute to the body's toxin load and recommend their removal.

Criticism and risks[edit | edit source]

Detoxification methods are often criticized by the medical community for their lack of scientific evidence and potential risks. Risks can include dehydration, electrolyte imbalances, and more serious complications in people with pre-existing health conditions.
