Deutsche Medizinische Wochenschrift
Deutsche Medizinische Wochenschrift (DMW, German medical Weekly) is a prominent German medical journal established in 1875 by Paul Börner. The journal has a long-standing history and was once highly regarded in the field of medical publications.
Historical Significance[edit | edit source]
In the 1980s, the Deutsche Medizinische Wochenschrift was ranked among the top medical journals worldwide, holding the 10th position in terms of its impact factor. However, the subsequent decades saw a decline in its influence. This decline is attributed to the reduced prominence of the German language in global medical research and the emergence of numerous new medical journals published in English. These changes reflected the shift in the scientific community toward the dominance of English as the primary language of medical research and communication.
Current Status[edit | edit source]
Today, the Deutsche Medizinische Wochenschrift is published by Georg Thieme Verlag, a well-known academic publishing house specializing in medical literature. The journal serves as an official publication of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Innere Medizin (German Society for Internal Medicine) and the Gesellschaft Deutscher Naturforscher und Ärzte (Society of German Natural Scientists and Physicians).
Editorial Leadership[edit | edit source]
The current editor-in-chief of the journal is Martin Middeke, a recognized authority in the field of medicine. Under his leadership, the journal continues to contribute to scientific discourse, although its reach and impact are now more localized compared to its global influence in the past.
Impact Factor and Ranking[edit | edit source]
According to the Journal Citation Reports, the Deutsche Medizinische Wochenschrift had an impact factor of 0.625 in 2008. This placed it at rank 86 out of 107 journals in the category "G". While this reflects a modest position in the competitive landscape of medical journals, the DMW remains a respected source of medical research and commentary in the German-speaking world.
