Dhekelia

Dhekelia is one of the two British Overseas Territories on the island of Cyprus, the other being Akrotiri. Officially known as the Dhekelia Sovereign Base Area (SBA), it is an important military base for the United Kingdom.

Dhekelia is located on the southeastern coast of Cyprus, near the city of Larnaca. It covers an area of approximately 131 square kilometers. The territory is divided into two main areas: the Eastern Sovereign Base Area (ESBA) and the Western Sovereign Base Area (WSBA). The ESBA is the larger of the two and includes the main military installations.

The Dhekelia Sovereign Base Area was established in 1960 when Cyprus gained independence from the United Kingdom. The bases were retained by the UK under the Treaty of Establishment, which allowed the UK to maintain a military presence on the island.

Dhekelia is administered by the British Forces Cyprus (BFC), which is responsible for the defense and security of the territory. The base commander acts as the administrator of the SBA. The legal system in Dhekelia is based on English law, and the territory has its own court system.
