Didier Pittet
Didier Pittet (born March 20, 1957) is a Swiss physician and epidemiologist known for his work in infection control and hospital hygiene. He is a leading figure in the promotion of hand hygiene in healthcare settings.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Didier Pittet was born in Geneva, Switzerland. He studied medicine at the University of Geneva, where he obtained his medical degree. He later specialized in infectious diseases and hospital epidemiology.
Career[edit | edit source]
Pittet is a professor at the University of Geneva Hospitals and Faculty of Medicine. He is the director of the Infection Control Programme and the World Health Organization (WHO) Collaborating Centre on Patient Safety.
Hand Hygiene Promotion[edit | edit source]
Pittet is best known for his role in promoting hand hygiene in healthcare. He led the development of the WHO's "Clean Care is Safer Care" program, which aims to improve hand hygiene practices worldwide. His work has significantly reduced healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) globally.

Didier Pittet has received numerous awards for his contributions to public health and infection control, including the Nightingale Medal and the Robert Koch Gold Medal.
