Mozart Die Entführung aus dem Serail Uraufführung 1782

Die Entführung aus dem Serail (The Abduction from the Seraglio, K. 384) is an opera in three acts by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, with a German libretto by Gottlieb Stephanie, based on a work by Christoph Friedrich Bretzner. It premiered on 16 July 1782 at the Burgtheater in Vienna. The opera is a Singspiel, a form that includes both singing and spoken dialogue. It was one of Mozart's first major successes and remains popular in the opera repertoire today.

Plot[edit | edit source]

The story is set in the 17th century in a Turkish seraglio and revolves around the attempt of the Spanish nobleman Belmonte to rescue his fiancée Konstanze from the harem of Pasha Selim. Belmonte is assisted by his servant Pedrillo, who is trying to rescue his own beloved, Blonde, Konstanze's English maid. The opera explores themes of love, loyalty, and forgiveness.

Characters[edit | edit source]

  • Belmonte (tenor) - A Spanish nobleman
  • Konstanze (soprano) - Belmonte's fiancée, held captive in the seraglio
  • Pedrillo (tenor) - Belmonte's servant, in love with Blonde
  • Blonde (soprano) - Konstanze's English maid, in love with Pedrillo
  • Osmin (bass) - The overseer of the Pasha's harem, in love with Blonde
  • Pasha Selim (speaking role) - The ruler of the seraglio

Music[edit | edit source]

The score of Die Entführung aus dem Serail is notable for its use of Turkish music, which was very much in vogue at the time. Mozart incorporated various "Turkish" elements, such as the use of piccolos, cymbals, and bass drums, to evoke the exotic setting. The opera contains a mix of dramatic arias, tender duets, and lively ensemble pieces, showcasing Mozart's ability to convey deep emotion and character through music.

Reception and Legacy[edit | edit source]

Upon its premiere, the opera was an immediate success and has remained a staple of the operatic repertoire. It was particularly admired by Emperor Joseph II, who is famously misquoted as saying that the opera had "too many notes." Die Entführung aus dem Serail is celebrated for its beautiful music, complex characters, and the humane portrayal of Pasha Selim, who ultimately frees the captives out of respect for their love and loyalty.

Influence[edit | edit source]

The opera had a significant impact on the development of the German Singspiel, influencing later composers such as Beethoven and Weber. Its blend of comedy and serious drama, along with its exotic setting, helped to broaden the scope of operatic storytelling.
