Diethylamino hydroxybenzoyl hexyl benzoate

Diethylamino Hydroxybenzoyl Hexyl Benzoate (DHHB) is an organic compound used primarily in sunscreen products due to its ability to absorb ultraviolet (UV) rays. It is a derivative of benzoic acid and is known for its excellent photostability and broad-spectrum UV protection.

Chemical Structure[edit | edit source]

The chemical structure of DHHB consists of a benzoyl group, a hexyl group, and a diethylamino group. The benzoyl group is responsible for the compound's ability to absorb UV rays, while the hexyl group improves its solubility in organic solvents. The diethylamino group enhances the compound's photostability.

Uses[edit | edit source]

DHHB is primarily used in sunscreen products due to its ability to absorb both UVA and UVB rays. It is also used in other cosmetic products such as lip balms and moisturizers for its UV protection properties. In addition to its use in cosmetics, DHHB is also used in some types of plastics to prevent UV degradation.

Safety[edit | edit source]

DHHB is generally considered safe for use in cosmetics. However, like all sunscreen ingredients, it should be used as directed to avoid potential skin irritation or allergic reactions.

Regulation[edit | edit source]

In the European Union, DHHB is approved for use in cosmetics under the name Uvinul A Plus. In the United States, it is not currently approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use in over-the-counter sunscreen products.
