Diethylstilbestrol diacetate

Diethylstilbestrol diacetate is a synthetic, nonsteroidal estrogen of the stilbestrol group that is used in the treatment of menopausal and postmenopausal disorders. It was also used formerly to treat certain types of breast and prostatic malignancies.

Pharmacology[edit | edit source]

Diethylstilbestrol diacetate is a long-acting estrogen derivative. The drug is well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and is rapidly hydrolyzed to diethylstilbestrol after absorption.

Clinical Uses[edit | edit source]

Diethylstilbestrol diacetate is used primarily in the treatment of menopausal and postmenopausal disorders and in the palliative treatment of prostatic cancer and breast cancer. The drug also has been used in the prevention of postpartum breast engorgement.

Side Effects[edit | edit source]

The most common side effects of diethylstilbestrol diacetate include nausea, vomiting, bloating, increased or decreased weight, changes in sex drive, and breast tenderness. In rare cases, it can cause more serious side effects such as blood clots, stroke, and cancer of the uterus.

Contraindications[edit | edit source]

Diethylstilbestrol diacetate is contraindicated in patients with a history of hypersensitivity to the drug or any component of the formulation, in patients with a history of thrombophlebitis, thrombosis, or thromboembolic disorders, and in patients with known or suspected estrogen-dependent neoplasia.
