Digital arteries

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

(Redirected from Digital artery)

Digital arteries are blood vessels that supply blood to the fingers and toes. There are two types of digital arteries: the palmar digital arteries and the dorsal digital arteries. The palmar digital arteries supply blood to the palm side of the fingers and toes, while the dorsal digital arteries supply blood to the back side of the fingers and toes.

Anatomy[edit | edit source]

The digital arteries originate from the superficial palmar arch and the deep palmar arch in the hand, and from the plantar arch in the foot. They run along the sides of each finger and toe, supplying them with oxygenated blood.

Each digital artery is accompanied by two digital nerves, which provide sensory and motor innervation to the fingers and toes. The digital arteries and nerves are protected by the digital sheath, a fibrous tissue that surrounds them.

Function[edit | edit source]

The main function of the digital arteries is to supply blood to the fingers and toes. This is crucial for the function of these digits, as they require a constant supply of oxygen and nutrients to function properly.

The digital arteries also play a role in thermoregulation. By constricting or dilating, they can control the amount of blood flowing to the fingers and toes, thereby helping to regulate body temperature.

Clinical significance[edit | edit source]

Diseases of the digital arteries can lead to serious problems, including digital ischemia, a condition in which the fingers or toes do not receive enough blood. This can cause pain, numbness, and in severe cases, tissue death.

Raynaud's disease is a common condition that affects the digital arteries. It is characterized by episodes of digital artery constriction, leading to cold, numb, and discolored fingers or toes.

Digital artery aneurysm is a rare condition in which a section of a digital artery becomes enlarged. This can cause pain and swelling, and in severe cases, can lead to rupture of the artery.
