Disabled Parking Permit

A Disabled Parking Permit (DPP), also known as a Handicap Parking Permit, is a card issued by a government authority that allows individuals with certain disabilities to park their vehicles in designated parking spaces. These spaces are typically located closer to the entrances of buildings and are marked with the International Symbol of Access.

Eligibility[edit | edit source]

Eligibility for a Disabled Parking Permit varies by jurisdiction, but generally, individuals with mobility impairments that limit their ability to walk or those who require the use of a wheelchair, walker, or crutches are eligible. Some jurisdictions also issue permits to individuals with certain non-mobility related conditions, such as severe lung disease or heart conditions.

Application Process[edit | edit source]

The application process for a Disabled Parking Permit typically involves completing an application form and providing medical documentation of the disability. The form and documentation are then reviewed by the issuing authority, which may be a local or state government agency, depending on the jurisdiction. If approved, the permit is usually mailed to the applicant.

Use and Restrictions[edit | edit source]

A Disabled Parking Permit must be displayed in the vehicle when parked in a designated disabled parking space. The permit is typically hung from the rear-view mirror or placed on the dashboard. It is important to note that the permit is issued to the individual, not the vehicle, and can be used in any vehicle in which the permit holder is traveling.

Misuse of a Disabled Parking Permit, such as using it when the permit holder is not present, is considered a violation and can result in fines or other penalties. Some jurisdictions also have laws against forging or altering a permit.

International Recognition[edit | edit source]

Many countries recognize Disabled Parking Permits issued by other countries. This is facilitated by the European Conference of Ministers of Transport (ECMT) Resolution, which recommends that all member countries recognize disabled parking permits issued by other member countries.
