Disinfect refers to the process of eliminating or reducing harmful microorganisms from inanimate objects and surfaces. Disinfection does not necessarily kill all microorganisms, especially resistant bacterial spores; it is less effective than sterilization, which is an extreme physical or chemical process that kills all types of life.

Chemical Disinfectants include substances such as alcohol, chlorine, and hydrogen peroxide. These substances work by destroying the cell walls of microorganisms or by interfering with their metabolism.
