The Walt Disney World Resort, commonly referred to as Disney World, is an entertainment complex located in Bay Lake and Lake Buena Vista, Florida, United States. The resort is the flagship destination of Disney's worldwide theme park empire and was opened on October 1, 1971.

The concept for Disney World was developed by Walt Disney in the early 1960s. After the success of Disneyland in Anaheim, California, Disney wanted to create a new theme park that would include a larger variety of attractions and accommodations. The project was referred to as "The Florida Project" and was intended to be a "vacation kingdom of the world."
