(Redirected from Distends)

Distension refers to the state of being distended, enlarged, swollen from internal pressure. It is a common symptom in a variety of medical conditions.

Causes[edit | edit source]

Distension can be caused by a variety of factors, including fluid retention, gas, tumor, or mass. It can also be a symptom of a number of medical conditions, such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome, gastroenteritis, ovarian cysts, and pregnancy.

Symptoms[edit | edit source]

The main symptom of distension is a feeling of fullness or tightness in the abdomen. This can be accompanied by pain, nausea, vomiting, and changes in bowel movements. In severe cases, distension can cause difficulty breathing.

Diagnosis[edit | edit source]

Diagnosis of distension involves a physical examination and a review of the patient's medical history. Additional tests, such as ultrasound, CT scan, or MRI, may be required to determine the underlying cause.

Treatment[edit | edit source]

Treatment for distension depends on the underlying cause. This can range from dietary changes and medication for conditions like IBS, to surgery for conditions like ovarian cysts or tumors.
