Donald Angus Cameron of Lochiel was a prominent figure in Scottish history. He was the 24th Chief of Clan Cameron, a powerful Highland clan with a long and storied history. Lochiel was known for his leadership during the Jacobite uprisings of the 18th century, particularly during the Jacobite Rising of 1745.
Early Life[edit | edit source]
Donald Angus Cameron of Lochiel was born in Scotland in 1708. He was the son of John Cameron, the 23rd Chief of Clan Cameron, and Anne Campbell. Lochiel inherited the chieftainship of the clan upon his father's death in 1748.
Jacobite Uprisings[edit | edit source]
Lochiel played a significant role in the Jacobite uprisings, particularly during the Jacobite Rising of 1745. He was a key supporter of Charles Edward Stuart, also known as Bonnie Prince Charlie, and led the Cameron Highlanders in battle.
During the Battle of Culloden in 1746, Lochiel was wounded and captured by government forces. He was later imprisoned in the Tower of London but was eventually released.
Later Life[edit | edit source]
After the defeat of the Jacobites, Lochiel went into exile in France. He later returned to Scotland and lived out the rest of his days at his ancestral home, Achnacarry Castle.
Donald Angus Cameron of Lochiel passed away in 1748 and was succeeded as Chief of Clan Cameron by his son, John Cameron.
