From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Dorian "Doc" Paskowitz (March 3, 1921 – November 10, 2014) was an American surfer, physician, and health and fitness advocate, renowned for his unconventional lifestyle and philosophy on health and parenting. He is best known for founding the Paskowitz Surf Camp, one of the oldest and most influential surf camps in the world. Paskowitz's life and philosophy were the subjects of the documentary film Surfwise directed by Doug Pray.

Early Life[edit | edit source]

Dorian Paskowitz was born in Galveston, Texas, to a Jewish family. He graduated from Stanford University School of Medicine and served in the United States Navy during World War II. After his service, Paskowitz practiced medicine but eventually abandoned his career and the conventional American lifestyle to pursue surfing and a nomadic life.

Career and Philosophy[edit | edit source]

Paskowitz's approach to life was deeply influenced by his views on health, fitness, and nutrition. He believed in a simple, natural diet and rigorous physical exercise, principles he applied not only to his life but also in raising his nine children with his wife, Juliette. The Paskowitz family lived in a 24-foot camper, traveling across the Americas and surfing.

In 1972, Paskowitz founded the Paskowitz Surf Camp, along with his family. The camp was unique because it not only taught surfing but also emphasized a healthy lifestyle, including diet and exercise. Paskowitz's methods were based on his belief that surfing was not just a sport but a way to understand life and health.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

Paskowitz is considered a pioneer in the surfing world, not just for his contributions to the sport but also for his lifestyle and philosophy. His teachings and way of life have inspired many in the surfing community and beyond. The Paskowitz Surf Camp continues to operate, now run by his children, and remains a testament to his legacy.

Paskowitz's life story was captured in the 2007 documentary Surfwise, which explored the unconventional life of the Paskowitz family, highlighting the challenges and benefits of their lifestyle.

Death[edit | edit source]

Dorian "Doc" Paskowitz died on November 10, 2014, at the age of 93. His passing was mourned by the surfing community and those who were inspired by his teachings and lifestyle.
