The Dormition Cathedral (Ukrainian: Успенський собор) is a prominent Eastern Orthodox cathedral located in Kharkiv, Ukraine. It is one of the most significant architectural landmarks in the city and serves as a major religious center for the Ukrainian Orthodox Church.
History[edit | edit source]
The Dormition Cathedral was originally constructed in 1777, during the period of the Russian Empire. The cathedral was designed by the renowned architect Bartolomeo Rastrelli, who is also known for his work on the Winter Palace in Saint Petersburg. The cathedral was consecrated in the same year and has since been an important site for religious and cultural events in Kharkiv.
During the Soviet era, the cathedral was closed and repurposed for secular use. It was not until the collapse of the Soviet Union that the cathedral was returned to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church and restored to its original function as a place of worship.
