Douglas William Elmendorf (born April 16, 1962) is an American economist who served as the Director of the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) from January 2009 to March 2015. He is currently the Dean of the Harvard Kennedy School.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Elmendorf was born in Poughkeepsie, New York. He graduated summa cum laude from Princeton University in 1983 with an A.B. in economics. He then earned a Ph.D. in economics from Harvard University in 1989.

Early Career[edit | edit source]

Elmendorf began his career as an assistant professor at Harvard University. He later worked at the Federal Reserve Board, the Council of Economic Advisers, and the U.S. Department of the Treasury.

Congressional Budget Office[edit | edit source]

In January 2009, Elmendorf was appointed as the Director of the Congressional Budget Office by the United States Congress. During his tenure, he was responsible for providing nonpartisan analyses of economic and budgetary issues to support the Congressional budget process. Elmendorf's work at the CBO included significant contributions to the analysis of the Affordable Care Act and the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.

Harvard Kennedy School[edit | edit source]

After leaving the CBO in 2015, Elmendorf became the Dean of the Harvard Kennedy School, where he continues to contribute to the field of public policy and economics.

Personal Life[edit | edit source]

Elmendorf is married and has two children. He resides in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
