Drift diving

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Drift diving is a type of scuba diving where the diver is transported by the water movement caused by the tide, currents, or wind. This type of diving allows divers to travel over large distances underwater without expending much energy.

Overview[edit | edit source]

In drift diving, divers enter the water and allow the current to carry them along. The dive boat then follows the divers' dive flag on the surface. This type of diving can be relaxing and enjoyable, as it requires less effort than other types of diving. However, it can also be challenging due to the need to navigate in moving water.

Equipment[edit | edit source]

The equipment used in drift diving is similar to that used in other types of scuba diving. This includes a dive mask, fins, dive computer, buoyancy control device (BCD), regulator, and scuba tank. In addition, divers often use a surface marker buoy (SMB) or dive flag to signal their location to the dive boat.

Safety Considerations[edit | edit source]

Drift diving can be dangerous if not done properly. Divers must be aware of their surroundings and be able to navigate in moving water. They must also be able to manage their air supply and avoid decompression sickness. It is recommended that divers have a dive buddy and stay close to them during the dive.

Training[edit | edit source]

Many dive organizations offer drift diving specialty courses. These courses teach divers how to plan and conduct a drift dive, how to use the equipment, and how to handle potential problems. Some of the organizations that offer these courses include Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI), Scuba Schools International (SSI), and National Association of Underwater Instructors (NAUI).
