Duras (grape)
Duras is a red French grape variety that is grown primarily in the Gaillac AOC region of South West France. It is one of the oldest grape varieties in the region and is known for its deep color and high tannin content, which contributes to the robust structure and aging potential of the wines it produces.
History[edit | edit source]
The origins of the Duras grape are believed to date back to ancient times, although the exact details of its history are not well-documented. It is known to have been cultivated in the Gaillac region for centuries, and it is thought to have been named after the town of Duras in the neighboring Lot-et-Garonne department.
Viticulture[edit | edit source]
Duras is a late-ripening grape variety that requires a long growing season to fully develop its flavors. It is relatively resistant to disease and can thrive in a variety of soil types, although it prefers well-drained, limestone-rich soils. The grape clusters are small and compact, with thick-skinned berries that contribute to the high tannin content of the wines.
Wine styles[edit | edit source]
Duras is typically used to produce full-bodied red wines that are rich in color and tannin. These wines often exhibit flavors of dark fruit, spice, and earth, with a firm structure that allows them to age well. In addition to being used as a varietal wine, Duras is also commonly blended with other local grape varieties, such as Braucol and Prunelard, to add depth and complexity.
Synonyms[edit | edit source]
Over the years, Duras has been known under various synonyms, including Durade, Duras Male, Duras Rouge, Durasca, Duraze, and Negrasse.
