From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

eLife is a unique, open access scientific journal that publishes research in the life and biomedical sciences. The journal was established in 2012 by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, the Max Planck Society, and the Wellcome Trust. It aims to improve the process of peer review and make scientific publishing more fair and transparent.

Overview[edit | edit source]

eLife is a non-profit organisation inspired by research funders and led by scientists. Its mission is to help scientists accelerate discovery by operating a platform for research communication that encourages and recognises the most responsible behaviours in science. eLife publishes outstanding works across the entire spectrum of life and biomedical sciences. The research is selected and evaluated by working scientists who are volunteering their time. They work tirelessly to ensure that all research meets the highest standards in all areas including scientific validity, novelty, significance, and clarity.

Publication Model[edit | edit source]

eLife follows an open access publication model, meaning that all of its content is freely accessible to anyone with an internet connection. This model is in contrast to the traditional subscription-based model, where readers or their institutions must pay to access content. eLife's open access model allows for the widest possible dissemination of research findings and has the potential to accelerate scientific discovery.

Peer Review Process[edit | edit source]

eLife has a unique peer review process designed to save authors time and to ensure that the most significant findings are published quickly. The process is consultative, meaning that reviewers and the handling editor discuss the reviews before a decision is made. This approach reduces the burden on authors and ensures that the decision letter provides a clear and consistent message about the strengths and weaknesses of the work.

eLife Sciences[edit | edit source]

In addition to the journal, eLife runs a platform called eLife Sciences which is a community of researchers, technologists, and professionals committed to help scientists accelerate discovery. This platform includes a range of services and initiatives designed to optimise scientific research communication in all its forms.
