The European Agency for Safety and Health at Work (EU-OSHA) is an agency of the European Union tasked with collecting, analyzing, and disseminating information on occupational safety and health (OSH) in order to improve working conditions across Europe. Established in 1994, EU-OSHA is headquartered in Bilbao, Spain.

History[edit | edit source]

The establishment of EU-OSHA was part of a broader effort by the European Union to improve working conditions and ensure a high level of safety and health at work. The agency was created by Council Regulation (EC) No 2062/94 of 18 July 1994, which was later amended by Regulation (EC) No 1112/2005.

EU-OSHA's mission is to make European workplaces safer, healthier, and more productive. The agency aims to:

  • Provide reliable and relevant information on OSH issues.
  • Develop and promote a culture of risk prevention.
  • Support the implementation of European OSH strategies.
  • Facilitate the exchange of information and good practices among EU member states.

Activities[edit | edit source]

EU-OSHA carries out a wide range of activities, including:

Research and Analysis[edit | edit source]

The agency conducts research and analysis on emerging risks and trends in occupational safety and health. It publishes reports, factsheets, and other resources to inform policymakers, employers, and workers.

Campaigns[edit | edit source]

EU-OSHA organizes Europe-wide campaigns to raise awareness about specific OSH issues. These campaigns often focus on topics such as stress at work, musculoskeletal disorders, and dangerous substances.

Networking[edit | edit source]

The agency works closely with national OSH bodies, social partners, and other stakeholders to promote cooperation and the exchange of information. It also coordinates the European OSH network, which includes focal points in each EU member state.

Online Tools and Resources[edit | edit source]

EU-OSHA provides a variety of online tools and resources, such as the OSHwiki, an online encyclopedia of OSH information, and the OiRA (Online interactive Risk Assessment) tool, which helps small and medium-sized enterprises conduct risk assessments.

Structure[edit | edit source]

EU-OSHA is governed by a tripartite Management Board, which includes representatives from governments, employers, and workers' organizations from each EU member state. The agency's day-to-day operations are managed by an Executive Director.

Funding[edit | edit source]

The agency is funded by the European Union and operates under the EU's financial regulations. Its budget is approved annually by the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union.
