Ealing

Ealing is a district of West London, England, located 7.9 miles (12.7 km) west of Charing Cross. It is the administrative centre of the London Borough of Ealing, and identified as a major metropolitan centre in the London Plan.

History[edit | edit source]

Ealing has a long history dating back to the Saxon times. It was originally named 'Gillingas', meaning 'place of the people associated with Gilla', from the personal name Gilla and the Old English suffix '-ingas', meaning 'people of'. Over the centuries, the name has changed, and has been known as 'Illing', 'Gilling', and 'Ylling' before finally becoming Ealing.

Geography[edit | edit source]

Ealing is located in the London Borough of Ealing, the third largest in London, and covers an area of 21.44 square miles (55.53 km2). It is bordered by Brent to the east, Hounslow to the south, Hillingdon to the west, and Harrow to the north.

Demographics[edit | edit source]

As of the 2011 census, Ealing had a population of 113,804. The area is ethnically diverse, with a large number of Polish residents and a significant South Asian community.

Landmarks[edit | edit source]

Ealing is home to several notable landmarks, including the Ealing Studios, which is the oldest continuously working film studio in the world, and the Questors Theatre, which is the largest amateur dramatic plays theatre in Europe.

Transport[edit | edit source]

Ealing is served by several London Underground stations, including Ealing Broadway, North Ealing, South Ealing, and West Ealing. It also has a number of bus routes, providing connections to other parts of London.

Education[edit | edit source]

Ealing has a number of schools, both primary and secondary, including Ealing County Grammar School, Ealing Independent College, and the University of West London.
