EcoCyc

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

EcoCyc is a scientific database for the bacterium Escherichia coli K-12 MG1655. The database is an encyclopedic reference work cataloging all of the characterized genes, proteins, metabolites, reactions, and pathways of this model organism. The EcoCyc project performs literature-based curation of its pathway/genome database, and of the E.coli O157:H7, and E.coli K-12 transcriptional regulatory network.

Overview[edit | edit source]

EcoCyc is a member of the BioCyc collection of pathway/genome databases (PGDBs). The BioCyc PGDBs are divided into three tiers according to their degree of curation. EcoCyc is a Tier 1 PGDB, which means it has received the highest level of curation. The EcoCyc project has been funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) since 1992, and by the National Science Foundation (NSF) from 2006-2011.

Content[edit | edit source]

EcoCyc describes Escherichia coli K-12 genes, proteins, chemical compounds, reactions, genetic network, and metabolic pathways. The database also provides information about gene essentiality, gene expression, and gene regulation.

Access[edit | edit source]

EcoCyc can be accessed for free on the web, and is also available for download to local computers. The database is updated every two months. The EcoCyc website provides a suite of software tools for browsing, searching, and analyzing the data in EcoCyc, and for comparative analyses of the other databases within the BioCyc collection.
