Edah HaChareidis (also spelled Edah HaChareidit) is a prominent Haredi Jewish communal organization based in Jerusalem. It is known for its stringent adherence to Jewish law and its opposition to Zionism. The organization provides various religious and communal services, including kashrut certification, religious courts, and educational institutions.

History[edit | edit source]

The Edah HaChareidis was established in the early 20th century as a response to the growing influence of Zionism and secularism within the Jewish community in Palestine. It was founded by a group of leading rabbis who sought to maintain traditional Jewish values and practices. Over the years, it has become one of the most influential Haredi organizations in Israel.

Leadership[edit | edit source]

The Edah HaChareidis is led by a council of prominent rabbis, known as the Badatz (Beit Din Tzedek). The head of the Badatz is referred to as the Gaavad (Gaon Av Beit Din). The organization has had several notable leaders, including Rabbi Yosef Tzvi Dushinsky, Rabbi Joel Teitelbaum, and Rabbi Yitzchok Tuvia Weiss.

Kashrut Certification[edit | edit source]

One of the primary functions of the Edah HaChareidis is its kashrut certification. The organization's kashrut standards are considered among the most stringent in the world. Many food products and establishments in Israel and abroad seek the Edah HaChareidis certification to appeal to the Haredi community.

Educational Institutions[edit | edit source]

The Edah HaChareidis oversees a network of educational institutions, including yeshivas, kollels, and schools for boys and girls. These institutions emphasize traditional Jewish learning and values, and they play a crucial role in the religious and cultural life of the Haredi community.

Opposition to Zionism[edit | edit source]

The Edah HaChareidis is known for its staunch opposition to Zionism and the State of Israel. The organization believes that the establishment of a Jewish state before the coming of the Messiah is contrary to Jewish law. This position has led to tensions between the Edah HaChareidis and other segments of the Jewish community in Israel.

Community Services[edit | edit source]

In addition to its religious and educational activities, the Edah HaChareidis provides a range of community services. These include charity organizations, mikvahs (ritual baths), and burial societies. The organization also operates a network of synagogues and prayer houses.
