Eddie Panlilio
Eddie "Among Ed" Tongol Panlilio (born December 6, 1953) is a Filipino Roman Catholic priest and politician who served as the Governor of Pampanga from 2007 to 2010. He is notable for being the first priest to be elected as a provincial governor in the Philippines.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Eddie Panlilio was born in Minalin, Pampanga, Philippines. He attended the San Carlos Seminary in Makati where he completed his studies in philosophy and theology. He was ordained as a priest in 1981.
Priesthood[edit | edit source]
Panlilio served in various parishes in Pampanga and was known for his advocacy for social justice and good governance. He was actively involved in community development projects and was a vocal critic of corruption and illegal gambling in the province.
Political Career[edit | edit source]
In 2007, Panlilio took a leave of absence from his priestly duties to run for the position of Governor of Pampanga. He ran as an independent candidate and won against incumbent Governor Mark Lapid and Lilia Pineda, a close ally of then-President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo. His victory was seen as a significant political upset.
Governorship[edit | edit source]
During his term as governor, Panlilio focused on anti-corruption measures and improving the province's revenue collection, particularly from the quarrying industry. His administration was credited with significantly increasing the province's income from quarrying fees.
However, his term was also marked by political challenges and controversies, including a recall petition initiated by his political opponents. Despite these challenges, Panlilio remained committed to his principles of transparency and accountability in governance.
Post-Governorship[edit | edit source]
After his term ended in 2010, Panlilio returned to his priestly duties. He continued to be an active voice in advocating for good governance and social justice in the Philippines.
Personal Life[edit | edit source]
Panlilio is known for his simple lifestyle and dedication to his faith and public service. He remains a respected figure in both the religious and political communities in the Philippines.
