History

Fort Edmonton

The area that is now Edmonton was first inhabited by indigenous peoples, including the Cree, Blackfoot, and Nakota Sioux. The first European to explore the area was Anthony Henday, a fur trader, in the mid-18th century. The establishment of Fort Edmonton in 1795 by the Hudson's Bay Company marked the beginning of the city's history as a trading post.

In 1904, Edmonton was incorporated as a city, and in 1905, it was designated as the capital of the newly created province of Alberta. The city experienced rapid growth during the early 20th century, driven by the oil boom and the construction of the Canadian Northern Railway.
