History

Structure

The education system in Barbados is divided into several levels:

Early Childhood Education

Primary education is compulsory for children aged 5 to 11 years. It consists of six years of schooling, from Infants A to Class 4. At the end of primary education, students take the Barbados Secondary Schools' Entrance Examination (BSSEE), commonly known as the Common Entrance Exam, to determine placement in secondary schools.

Secondary Education

Secondary education is for students aged 11 to 16 years and is divided into two cycles: the lower cycle (Forms 1 to 3) and the upper cycle (Forms 4 and 5). At the end of Form 5, students take the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) examinations, administered by the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC).

Post-Secondary and Tertiary Education

Post-secondary education includes sixth form (Forms 6 and 7), where students prepare for the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examinations (CAPE). Tertiary education is provided by institutions such as the University of the West Indies, Barbados Community College, and the Samuel Jackman Prescod Institute of Technology.

Higher Education

Barbados is home to several higher education institutions, including the University of the West Indies at Cave Hill, which offers undergraduate and postgraduate programs in various fields. The Barbados Community College provides associate degrees, diplomas, and certificates in a range of disciplines.

Technical and Vocational Education

Technical and vocational education is an important component of the Barbadian education system. The Samuel Jackman Prescod Institute of Technology offers programs in areas such as engineering, construction, and information technology.

Adult Education

Adult education programs are available to provide continuing education opportunities for adults. These programs are designed to improve literacy, vocational skills, and personal development.
