Edward Bligh, 5th Earl of Darnley

Edward Bligh, 5th Earl of Darnley, was born on 24 February 1795 and died on 10 February 1835. He was a British nobleman and politician who held the title of Earl of Darnley. Edward Bligh succeeded his father, John Bligh, 4th Earl of Darnley, upon his death in 1831.

Early Life[edit | edit source]

Edward Bligh was born on 24 February 1795, the son of John Bligh, 4th Earl of Darnley, and Lady Charlotte Mary, daughter of the 4th Duke of Marlborough. He was educated at Eton College and later attended Christ Church, Oxford.

Political Career[edit | edit source]

Edward Bligh entered politics and served as a Member of Parliament for Maidstone from 1818 to 1826. He later represented Canterbury from 1826 to 1831. In 1831, upon the death of his father, he succeeded as the 5th Earl of Darnley and entered the House of Lords.

Personal Life[edit | edit source]

In 1822, Edward Bligh married Lady Harriet, daughter of the 3rd Earl of Aylesford. The couple had three children together. Edward Bligh was known for his philanthropic activities and support for various charitable causes.

Death[edit | edit source]

Edward Bligh, 5th Earl of Darnley, passed away on 10 February 1835 at the age of 39. He was succeeded by his eldest son, George, who became the 6th Earl of Darnley.
