Edward Delafield (May 17, 1794 – February 13, 1875) was an American physician and one of the founders of the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary. He was a prominent figure in the field of ophthalmology and otolaryngology during the 19th century.

Early Life and Education

Edward Delafield was born in New York City, New York. He was the son of John Delafield, a prominent merchant, and Ann Hallett. Delafield attended Yale College, where he graduated in 1812. He then pursued medical studies at the College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York, earning his medical degree in 1815.

Career

After completing his medical education, Delafield traveled to Europe to further his studies in medicine. He spent time in London and Paris, where he studied under some of the leading physicians of the time. Upon returning to the United States, Delafield established a medical practice in New York City.

In 1820, Delafield co-founded the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary with John Kearney Rodgers. The institution was one of the first in the United States dedicated to the treatment of eye and ear diseases. Delafield served as the first president of the infirmary and played a crucial role in its development and success.

Contributions to Medicine
