Eleanor Parke Custis Lewis (1779–1852) was an American heiress and the granddaughter of Martha Washington. She was born to Martha Washington's son, John Parke Custis, and his wife, Eleanor Calvert Custis. Eleanor was raised at Mount Vernon, the Washington family estate, after her parents' deaths.

Early Life

Eleanor Parke Custis was born in 1779 in Abingdon, Virginia. She was the second child of John Parke Custis and Eleanor Calvert Custis. Her father died when she was very young, and her mother passed away shortly after. As a result, Eleanor was raised by her grandparents, George and Martha Washington, at Mount Vernon.

Marriage and Family

In 1799, Eleanor married Lawrence Lewis, who was George Washington's nephew. The couple had eight children together. They lived at Woodlawn Plantation, a property given to them by George Washington as a wedding gift.

Later Life

After George Washington's death in 1799, Eleanor and Lawrence Lewis inherited Mount Vernon. They worked to preserve the estate and its history. Eleanor was known for her hospitality and continued to host guests at Mount Vernon.

Eleanor Parke Custis Lewis passed away in 1852 at the age of 73. She was buried at Mount Vernon alongside her husband and other family members.

Legacy

Eleanor Parke Custis Lewis is remembered for her connection to the Washington family and her efforts to maintain Mount Vernon. Her descendants continue to be involved in the preservation of the estate.
