Electrical

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Electrical refers to the set of physical phenomena associated with the presence and motion of matter that has a property of electric charge. In early days, electricity was considered as being unrelated to magnetism. Later on, experimental investigations resulted in a better understanding that these two phenomena are intimately linked and can be considered two aspects of electromagnetism.

History[edit | edit source]

The discovery of electricity can be traced back to the ancient Greeks. Thales of Miletus, an ancient Greek philosopher, discovered that rubbing fur on substances like amber would cause an attraction between the two - a phenomenon that would later be known as static electricity.

Concepts[edit | edit source]

Electricity is a complex concept that is understood through several key ideas. These include:

  • Electric charge: Electric charge is a fundamental property of matter. It is carried by subatomic particles such as electrons and protons, and can be either positive or negative.
  • Electric field: An electric field is a region around a charged particle where an electric force is exerted on other charged particles.
  • Electric current: Electric current is the flow of electric charge. It is measured in amperes.
  • Electric potential: The electric potential at a point in an electric field is the amount of electric potential energy per unit of charge at that point. It is measured in volts.

Applications[edit | edit source]

Electricity has a wide range of applications and is used in various fields such as engineering, medicine, and everyday life. Some of the applications of electricity include:

  • Electric power: Electricity is used for lighting, heating, cooling, and powering appliances in homes and businesses.
  • Electronics: Electricity is used in electronics to power devices such as computers, televisions, and radios.
  • Electric vehicles: Electric vehicles use electricity as their primary source of power.
  • Medical applications: Electricity is used in various medical applications such as electrocardiograms and medical imaging.
