Electrochemical Skin Conductance

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Electrochemical Skin Conductance is a medical test used to measure the sweat gland function. It is a non-invasive method that provides information about the autonomic nervous system's function. The test is often used in the diagnosis of small fiber neuropathy and other neurological disorders.

Overview[edit | edit source]

Electrochemical skin conductance is a measure of the skin's ability to conduct electricity. This ability is directly related to the activity of the sweat glands, which are controlled by the small fibers of the autonomic nervous system. When these fibers are damaged, as in small fiber neuropathy, the sweat glands' activity decreases, leading to a decrease in skin conductance.

Procedure[edit | edit source]

The test is performed using a device that sends a small, harmless electrical current through the skin. The device measures the amount of current that is conducted back, which provides a measure of the skin's conductance. The test is usually performed on the hands and feet, where the sweat glands are most numerous.

Interpretation[edit | edit source]

A low electrochemical skin conductance value indicates a decrease in sweat gland activity, which may suggest damage to the small fibers of the autonomic nervous system. This can be a sign of small fiber neuropathy or other neurological disorders. However, other factors, such as skin temperature and hydration, can also affect the results, so the test should be interpreted in the context of the patient's overall clinical picture.

Clinical Use[edit | edit source]

Electrochemical skin conductance is used in the diagnosis of small fiber neuropathy, a condition that causes pain, tingling, and numbness in the extremities. It can also be used to monitor the progression of the disease and the effectiveness of treatment. In addition, the test can be used in the diagnosis of other neurological disorders that affect the autonomic nervous system, such as Parkinson's disease and diabetes.
